"When Shakti Overpowers" celebrates the divine feminine through the ancient psychospiritual practice of Kalaripayattu, one of the world's oldest martial art forms from Kerala, India, contemporary dance and ritual. The power of the female warrior energy is slowly revealed through the roots, rhythm and meditative soul of this ancient practice.

7 DAYS OF NAUTANKI FESTIVAL

July 1st, 2020 - July 7th, 2020

During our “7 days of nautanki” from July 1- July 7th, 2020 we celebrated the official launch of Nautanki Creations. We shared a glimpse into our work as performing artists (and now, very independent, low budget filmmakers).

UNDERCOVER INDIAN: THE DOCUMENTARY

Premiered July 1st, 2020

"Undercover Indian: The Documentary" reveals the unexpected journey of the hit one-woman show of the same name. The show tells the true story of 21 year old Ankita; born & brought up in Canada, Ankita is coerced into moving to India by her mother to learn more about her identity. The show began in Toronto in Nov. 2017 and went on to tour to sold out audiences in India, Sweden & Thailand. "Undercover Indian" is a play about belonging, becoming and the beauty of identifying with two worlds.

NANA & NANI: EK PREM KAHANI
(GRANDPA & GRANDMA: A LOVE STORY)

This film gives a glimpse into the beautiful love story of Kanta & Virendra, retired professors of Hindi who have been together for over 60 years. A short love letter of a film, this was a collective undertaking by 5 members of the Mehndiratta family, who have been in quarantine together in Chandigarh (North India) since March 2020. Kanta & Virendra play themselves and their granddaughter Saumya and grandson in-law, Lovnish portray them in their youth. The film is directed & edited by their granddaughter, Ankita.

An exploration on the merging of traditional with contemporary, through the ancient South Indian martial arts practice, Kalaripayattu. This piece draw on inspiration from the Gitanjali, the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore.

Kalari baby Govi & Ankita do Kalari Vandanam (salutation) together; a ritual - Kalari Vandanam is the beginning of practice of the ancient South Indian martial arts form, Kalaripayattu. This is the Hindustan Kalari Sangam style of Kalaripayattu.

UNTITLED: A DANCE DOCUMENTARY FILM (IN THE MAKING)

A special behind the scenes look at the journey of four dancers coming together to make a film. Based in Bangalore, India & trained in various Indian classical and Western contemporary forms, this footage reveals the dancer's exploration on daily life, the seemingly mundane, and a seeking to understand what drives us to our place of practice, as movement artists.

A warrior enters the battlefield, only to realize that the true battle lies within. Inspired by & filmed in Kozhikode, Kerala (South India) at Hindustan Kalari Sangam, a traditional Kalarippayattu training centre & Ayurvedic healing praxis established during the year of 1950, under the patronage of Guru Veerasree Sami Gurukkal.
